Make sure you visit the Old Village (Chorio), which lies 45 minutes away from the harbour on foot. You need to plan your trip early in the morning or after 17:00, because it can be an extremely hot walk. Endeavour to wear good walking shoes, especially if you plan to climb up to the 14th century castle and the Church of the Virgin Mary, as the rocks are very slippery.
The road to the Chorio is called Tarpon Springs Boulevard and was a donation from the people of Halki who now live in Tarpon Springs, Florida. On the way up the mountain, you will pass Pondamos beach and continue upwards (Pondamos can be a wonderful stop for a swim either on the way up, or the way down- with a lovely tavern, if you wish to eat.
As you walk up the mountain, you will see the “Old Village” with the Church of the Virgin Mary. Above that, you will see the UNESCO-protected castle from the 14th century BC, built by the Knights of St. John. It has now been restored and it has fantastic views towards Halki and the Aegean sea.
For the feast of the Virgin Mary (15th of August), there is a celebration on the night of the 14th with traditional Greek music at the Old Village, with a liturgy in the church. It is definitely a special event and worthwhile attending. It features traditional dancing, traditional Halki songs played on the lyre and the laouto, and the music and dancing continue until the wee hours of the morning. Ask how to get up there on foot or by taxi or mini bus. You can also go on foot.
Right above the church, there is the is the breathtaking UNESCO protected 14th century castle/fortress built by the Knights of St. John for the protection from the pirates. It is built on the ancient Acropolis site in Halki. It is a steep climb, but worth it. Make sure you use shoes that have a good grip, as the stones have become very slippery from use. It has now been renovated and not only is it a wonderful walk, with a wonderful view, but a unique opportunity to be present in such a historical site
Look no further! You have everything you need at Villa Hiona. A large balcony, sunbeds, umbrellas and 10 steps to the Aegean! No need to go anywhere else for the most stupendous view of the sea, Halki and in the morning, the sunrise straight across from the balcony.
Pondamos is a lovely, clean beach, about 10 minutes away from the center, on foot. Sunbeds are available and a there is a wonderful view of the monastery of Aghia Thekli and its cemetary to its left . Ponadmos beach is right on Tarpon Springs boulevard, on the way to the Chorio. Nick’s tavern is right above Pondamos beach, with tasty food and excellent views of the bay.
Both with beautiful waters and great taverns above.
